History of Hakata-ori Textile Industrial Association

How the Association was established
Kuroda Nagamasa became the feudal lord of Fukuoka in 1600, and allowed Hakata-ori to be made by only 12 manufacturers. They were given privileges under Oriya-kabu or textile goodwill until the beginning of the Meiji era. But when the abolishment of the domain system and establishment of the prefectural system was promulgated in 1871, the Oriya-kabu system was completely dissolved. Then came the age of free competition where one's real ability counts. To prevent the decline in quality caused by the increased number of manufacturers, the Hakata-ori Company, the predecessor of Hakata-ori Industrial Association, was established.
